Used Car Buying Guide in Pakistan: What to Check Before You Buy

Buying a used car in Pakistan is one of the largest financial decisions most people make. The second-hand car market is active across Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and every major city — but it also attracts fraud. This guide gives you a systematic process to make a safe purchase.

Step 1: Set a realistic budget including transfer costs

Transfer costs in Pakistan typically run 3–5% of the car's value, covering excise fees, token tax arrears, and any outstanding fines. Budget for these upfront. Also factor in immediate maintenance costs — most used cars need at least minor servicing after purchase.

Step 2: Verify the seller's identity

Before inspecting the car, confirm the seller's identity. On Sellz.pk, every seller is CNIC-verified — you know you're dealing with a real, identified person. In any transaction, always ask to see the seller's original CNIC and confirm it matches the registration book.

Step 3: Check registration documents carefully

The registration book (RC book) is the most important document. Check that the vehicle's engine number and chassis number match the book exactly — even one digit different is a red flag. Confirm the registered owner's name matches the seller's CNIC. If the car has been transferred multiple times without proper documentation, ownership disputes can arise after you've already paid.

Step 4: Check for loans and court orders

Visit the local excise and taxation office (or use their online portal in larger cities) to check if the vehicle has any outstanding loans, bank liens, or court seizure orders. A car with a bank lien cannot be legally transferred until the loan is cleared — even if the seller tells you otherwise. This check costs little and can save you from a very expensive mistake.

Step 5: Get an independent mechanic inspection

Never rely on the seller's word about the car's condition. Bring your own trusted mechanic or take the car to a workshop for an inspection. Key things to check: engine oil (colour and level), gearbox smoothness, clutch, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, all electronics, rust under the car and in the wheel arches, and the condition of tyres. A proper inspection costs a few thousand rupees and is always worth it.

Step 6: Test drive properly

Test drive on different road types — a smooth road shows nothing. Drive on a bumpy road to check suspension, test the brakes hard at low speed, accelerate to highway speed if possible, and listen for unusual noises. A seller who refuses a test drive or tries to limit it is a warning sign.

Step 7: Complete the transfer at the excise office

Never accept a car on a power of attorney (POA) alone without completing the official transfer. Transfer the vehicle at the excise office with both buyer and seller present. You'll need the original registration book, both CNICs, and payment of transfer fees. Once transferred, the vehicle is officially in your name and protected from the seller's future issues.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Seller refuses to show the original registration book
  • Car is not registered in the seller's name and they have no proper authority letter
  • Price is significantly below market — usually means a hidden defect or legal issue
  • Seller pressures for quick payment before inspection
  • Engine or chassis numbers don't match the documents
  • Seller wants to complete the deal away from the excise office

Buying from a verified seller on a platform like Sellz.pk, where every seller's CNIC is confirmed, significantly reduces the risk of dealing with fraudulent ownership claims.
